La peinture au pistolet est une tâche pénible lorsqu'elle est réalisée manuellement, à cause de la toxicité des peintures, et de la monotonie de la tâche. Lorsque les surfaces à peindre sont simples, on utilise des manipulateurs séquentiels à 2 ou 3 degrés de liberté. Pour des formes plus complexes, et des grandes séries, la solution robotique s'impose souvent. Caractéristiques des robots à peindre : Ils doivent comporter 5 axes au moins, mais des robots à 7 et même 8 axes permettent le contournement d'obstacles pour peindre des formes complexes ou à l'intérieur de coques.
